چکیده
The use of exterior pcnalty formulations of boundary value problems as a basis for the development of finite element methods has gained much popularity in recent times. Such methods frequently lead to fewer unknowns than Illultiplier methods: they sometimes provide regularity that admits the use of numerical schcmes that might not be otherwisc applicable. alld they can produce one-parameter families of approximate solutions. depending upon the penalty parameter e, all members of which have a useful physical or mathematical significance. For a discussion of some aspects of finite element methods based on exterior penalty ideas. sec, for instance. [I] or [2]. There are two important aspects of penalty mcthods that motivate the present investigation. First of all. penalty methods are widely used in optimization problems in IR", and in the optimization literature one finds not only exterior penalty methods in frequent use. but also so-called interior penalty methods. hybrid (exterior/interior) methods. exponential penalties, etc. Are any of these alternative penalty approaches useful in variational formulation and approximation of boundary value problems? Second. the penalty finite element methods are closely related to mixed finite element methods and a brief examination of some of their properties seems appropriate for a symposium devoted to this general class of methods. We shall be concerned here with penalty-type formulations and finite clement approximations of a class of contact problems in elasticity of the form

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Bending of Straight Beams Using hp-Spectral Approximations
Displacement finite element models of various beam theories have been developed using traditional finite element interpolations (i.e., Hermite cubic or equi-spaced Lagrange functions). Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, total rotation φ and/or shear strain γxz, or in the integral form u...

متن کاملModified Fixed Grid Finite Element Method to Solve 3D Elasticity Problems of Functionally Graded Materials
In the present paper, applicability of the modified fixed grid finite element method in solution of three dimensional elasticity problems of functionally graded materials is investigated. In the non-boundary-fitted meshes, the elements are not conforming to the domain boundaries and the boundary nodes which are used in the traditional finite element method for the application of boundary condit...

The implementation of high-order (spectral) approximations associated with FEM is an approach to overcome the difficulties encountered in the numerical analysis of complex problems. This paper proposes the use of the spectral finite element method, originally developed for computational fluid dynamics problems, to achieve improved solutions for these types of problems. Here, the interpolation n...
متن کاملGeneralized Conjugate Functions for Mixed Finite Element Approximations of Boundary Value Problems
The idea of conjugate or dual representations for finite-element approximations was introduced in [1] in connection with purely topological properties of finite element models; i.e., in the spirit of linear graph theory, if f(u) is a linear functional on a space M of finite element approximations u, then there exists a consistent (conjugate) approximation of f which renders f(u) invariant under...
